Urgent! Well-known lawyer and human rights defender, hero Vadim Kuramshin in great danger for participating in OSCE-meeting in Poland

Kazakhstan - The world is watching. Injustice! Kyrie eleison! PERSECUTION.
God is stronger than evil.

October 31, 2012 Praying, mourning
"Please send urgent protests demanding Vadim’s immediate release, following his acquittal by jury trial, to the Kazakhstan Embassies in your country,"
Vadim Kurahshin, lawyer and human rights defender (Front line defenders) cut his veins in detention centre (Petropavlovsk). He was given minimal treatment for his wounds. An ambulance took him to Taraz (prison) The arrest is illegal, the police does not have any court order for his arrest.

"Well-known human rights activist, Vadim Kuramshin, is facing a new court trial and a lengthy prison sentence.

It has just been announced that the Appeal Court of the Zhambul region of Kazakhstan has decided to revoke the decision of a jury at Vadim Kuramshin’s previous court trial (the jury found Vadim not guilty on all but one minor charge). The Appeal Court has now decided to re-open the case following further investigations.

Vadim Kuramshin was arrested on 23 January this year. He was charged with extorting money from the public prosecutor, Mukhtar Uderbaev, whom Vadim himself wanted to take legal action against. The whole trial clearly violated the country’s Criminal Procedure Code and was constantly postponed, causing Vadim to declare a hunger strike in order to get the court to reconvene.

On 28 August, the Taraz city court pronounced sentence on Vadim. Rather than condemn Kuramshin to 14 years imprisonment in a special regime colony as the state prosecutor asked, the court judge, Samat Tolesbay, decided to release Vadim, with just one year of conditional bail.

Today however the Appeal Court has revoked that decision. Vadim is once again facing arrest and a new trial that could lead to a lengthy sentence.

Please protest against this latest travesty of justice and serious threat against the well-known human rights’ activist."

Please send urgent arrests to the Kazakhstan Embassies in your country with copies to kazakhstansolidarity@gmail.com

"Vadim Kuramshin has again been arrested! This follows the decision of a court in Taraz, southern Kazakhstan, to challenge the results of his trial last month. The jury had found him not guilty on all but one minor charge. (See articles on this site)
He was taken in on Wednesday evening when armed police raided his flat in Petropavlovsk, northern Kazakhstan. They had no valid arrest warrant in their hands but he was taken to prison in Petropavlovsk where conditions are horrendous. Having cut his own veins, he was given emergency treatment. Then he was put on the road, under escort, to travel the nearly 2,000 kilometres to Taraz for his retrial.
Immediately friends and neighbuors started protests. In his home town of Petropavlovsk, supporters have held a number of single-person pickets (which do not require sanction from the state). Incredibly, in Taraz, members of the jury who acquitted him a month ago have held a special meeting and agreed to set up a campaign in Vadim’s defence!"
Please send urgent protests demanding Vadim’s immediate release, following his acquittal by jury trial, to the Kazakhstan Embassies in your country, with copies to kazakhstansolidarity@gmail.com:
Example of protest message:
We are appalled at the renewed harassment and atrocious ill-treatment of human rights lawyer, Vadim Kuramshin. He has been unlawfully arrested, without a warrant, and held in prison inPetropavlovskwhere conditions are notoriously bad. Vadim felt driven to cut his own veins. He was given minimal treatment for his wounds and immediately transferred to Taraz, more than 2,000 kilometres away, under police custody. This is a disgrace! On 28 August, a jury in Taraz cleared Vadim of all the charges against him, apart from a very minor one. We see no reason to hold him and demand his immediate release.

The well-known human rights defender (Front line defenders) Vadim Kuramhin is not known among especially young people in Kazhakstan. Special police force (KGB) made a raid to his home in Kazhakstan (without documents) and the neighbours was told that Vadim was a dangerous terrorist. On november 3, Saturday his family, friends and collegues held a picket outside the prosecutors office to tell about the repression throughout the country. Persecution started tree days erlier in his small apartment outside the town.

Injustice, injustice, injustice! --- What a hero!
"As soon as Vadim was released, he continued his human rights activities. Within two months, he published a number of video footages from inside the prisons and oral testimonies of prisoners. One of his defendants was a woman prisoner who was subjected to sexual abuse and corporal punishment by prison administration.
Fellow colleagues of Vadim Kuramshin claim that he was severely beaten and as a protest he cut his veins. Neither his lawyer nor his relatives can meet with him in a detention facility. Now, Vadim Kuramshin's life is in danger. Therefore, I call upon international human rights organizations to condemn his arrest and urged the authorities of Kazakhstan for his immediate release"

Sabina Mahinina född 1987 har hungersstrejkat i fängelset pga att hon blivit utsatt för våldtäkt och misshandel. Mänskorättskämpen Vadim Kuramshin har försökt hjälpa henne och därmed själv råkat illa ut.

Sabina is on hunger strike because of sexual abuse and violence in prison. Vadim Kuramshin has tried to help her.
